Hainan Beach Guide: Which Sanya Bay, Which Island

A Hainan beach trip is almost always a Sanya trip. Haikou is the provincial capital and a fine overnight if you fly in north. The sand, winter sun, and island days that international guests mean sit at the south end of the island. Pick one bay as a base. Then add at most one island day and one inland green day.

Hainan is an island; Sanya is the beach city

Hainan is China’s southern island province. Sanya is the resort city on the southern coast. Places to visit in China often dump “tropical island” next to Guilin. They are not the same trip. Guilin is karst and Li River. Hainan beach time is swimming, shade, and whether the bay in front of your hotel is actually swimmable.

Haikou if you land there: colonial streets, old town food, a night, then fly or train south. Do not use Haikou as your swimming week. Sanya if you want the Hainan beach week we actually operate: Yalong, Dadonghai, Sanya Bay, Haitang — four different products with the same English word “beach.”

What a Hainan beach day looks like

The coconut promenade is the first walk after you land. Palms, white sand, and a long turquoise strip. The rainbow coastal road is a drive with a view, not a hike. The striped lighthouse and the toy train sit on the same sunny edge. This is the Hainan beach product: shade, a car, and one swim. It is not a backpack loop.

Which bay to book (this is the decision)

• Yalong — usually the best first swim. Couples, honeymoon, postcard sand. Skip if you need walkable cheap dinners every night.
• Dadonghai — yes you can swim; busier. First stay, food within a short walk, mid-range.
• Sanya Bay — walk and sunset more than “best swim.” Airport-side hotels, long coconut promenade.
• Haitang — often windier; treat as resort + duty-free. Luxury campus, shopping. Not the default swimming beach.

There is no single “best Hainan beach.” There is a best match. We ask two questions before we hold rooms: do you swim, and do you want dinner without a 25-minute car.

Things to do in Sanya in 4–5 days

Day 1 — Land, bay, sunset. No island. Walk the promenade in front of your hotel. In Sanya Bay that is the coconut path. The rainbow coastal road is a later drive. Flights into SYX plus tropical humidity punish people who book Wuzhizhou on arrival day.

Day 2 — Island day, one only. Wuzhizhou if you want clearer water and snorkel/dive menus. Chinese notes and dock practice agree: go early. Confirm last return boats the night before. West Island if you want a slower fishing-village pace with kids. Do not book both islands.

Day 3 — Beach morning + one inland green. Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park or Yanoda if you want rainforest boardwalks. Keep the second half empty.

Day 4 — Nanshan or Luhuitou or nothing. Nanshan is a large Buddhist coastal park (dress with shoulders covered). Duty-free in Haitang is a half day if someone in the group actually shops.

Day 5 — Buffer. Weather on Hainan beach weeks is the real boss: summer rain, occasional typhoon posture, winter sun. We keep a spare day so an island ticket can move.

Private transfers matter more here than in Xi’an. Sanya is spread out. A custom China trip with a driver is how we run honeymoon and family weeks.

Hainan food: coconut, chicken, and seafood you weighed yourself

• Coconut chicken — clear coconut broth. The island’s default shared pot.
• Wenchang chicken — Hainan’s other chicken, often with dipping sauces. Ancestor of Singapore “Hainanese chicken rice,” not a copy.
• First Market (第一市场) — buy seafood by weight, pay a cook fee next door. Go with a speaker of Chinese or a guide. The pit is a tout steering you to a sit-down “set” with no scale.
• Baoluo noodles — sour-spicy breakfast soup.
• Qingbuliang — coconut milk, beans, ice, fruit. Afternoon, not a meal replacement.

Skip mystery “catch of the boat” on the island without a price. Skip forcing three seafood blowouts in three nights.

Weather, tickets, and the “don’t backpack Sanya” rule

Reconfirm island opening and boat hours on the official channel the day before. We will not print a 2026 ticket number here that will be wrong next month. Typhoon season can erase an island day. That is why the itinerary has a spare. Winter (roughly November–March) is why northern guests fly here; it is also peak rates.
